Medical Assistance & Program Doctors

During your time in Berlin you will have access to excellent medical care, and the program can help you to find the appropriate provider based on your individual medical needs. In general, there are three different forms of medical assistance you can seek out, based on the severity of your situation.

I. Ambulance for Life-Threatening Emergencies
In the case of a life-threatening emergency always call 112! This emergency number also works in all other European countries!

Be prepared for the so-called "Five Ws":
  1. Wo ist der Notfall/Unfall? (Where did the accident happen?)
  2. Was ist geschehen? (What happened?)
  3. Wie viele Verletzte/Betroffene sind zu versorgen? (What is the number of people that need medical attention?)
  4. Welche Verletzungen oder Krankheitszeichen haben die Betroffenen? (What kind of injuries/symptoms do they have?)
  5. Warten Sie immer auf Rückfragen der Rettungsleitstelle! (Wait for questions the operator may have before hanging up!)

II. On-call Urgent Care Doctors for Home Visits
In Berlin, there is a consortium of urgent care physicians, available 24/7 for house calls, in the case of urgent medical conditions that 1) don't allow you to wait to see your physician during her regular hours, or 2) don't allow you to travel to your doctor's office. This on-call urgent care service will be covered under your German student health insurance. They can be reached at the following number:
030 310031

III. General Practitioners/Physicians Who Speak English
For medical problems that do not require emergency or urgent care, you can go to any physician/general practitioner in Berlin. The program recommends that you contact one of our three "program doctors," all physicians that we have had good experiences with, and all of whom speak good English. For their contact information, please click here. Prof. Kaupp can help you make an appointment, and set up the direct pay with the insurance.
